MyoSure fibroid and polyp removal procedure is a safe and easy method of removing any submucosal fibroids and polyps from the uterus. This method consists of removing the fibroids and polyps without cutting the uterus. MyoSure procedure is recommended for women who want to keep their uterus intact and functional, allowing them to conceive in the future.

Uterine fibroids are non – cancerous tissue growths inside of the muscles of the uterine wall. Fibroids vary in size and shape. They can be multiple or single fibroids. There are different types of uterine fibroids:

  • Submucosal fibroids
  • Intramural fibroids
  • Subserosal fibroids
  • Pedunculated fibroids

Uterine polyps are non – cancerous protrusions of the endometrial tissue on the uterine lining. They are usually small, but as they grow they become fragile and bleed. Due to their fragility, uterine polyps are one of the main reasons of uterine bleeding. Uterine polyps, once removed, can recur.

If uterine fibroids or uterine polyps are suspected the following examinations are usually performed:

  • Hysteroscopy – consists of inserting the hysteroscope (a thin, lighted and flexible telescope that allows visibility of the uterus). The hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervix, which are first dilated with the help of a speculum. Hysteroscopy allows the doctor the examine the inside of the uterus and if any polyps are found, they can be removed.
  • Transvaginal ultrasound – consists of inserting a wand-like device inside of the vagina. This device emits ultrasounds which allow a good visualization of the interior of the uterus.
  • Hysterosonography – consists of injecting saline inside of the uterus through a catheter through the vagina and cervix. The saline helps the uterus expand, which gives a better visualization of the inside of the uterus.
  • Curettage – consists of inserting a curet (a long metal instrument with a loop) which helps scrape the uterine walls. Curettage is used to take biopsy samples or even remove a polyp.

Uterine fibroids and uterine polyps can be asymptomatic, while in some cases its signs and symptoms can be severe. Usually signs and symptoms of uterine fibroids and polyps include:

  • Irregular menstrual bleeding (frequent, unpredictable periods of variable length and heaviness)
  • Spotting between menstrual periods
  • Excessively heavy bleeding
  • Vaginal bleeding after menopause
  • Infertility, etc.

The MyoSure procedure is a simple and safe procedure that does not require a removal or even cutting of the uterus. It usually takes just 30 minutes. This method is ideal for woman with submucosal fibroids and polyps who wish to keep their uterus intact and functional in the future.

The MyoSure procedure consists of inserting a slander camera inside of the uterus, through the vagina and cervix. This camera allows a good visualization of the inside of the uterus. A slander wand is also inserted, which gently cuts the fibroid or polyp into tiny pieces. These pieces are then sucked out and removed from the uterus through a small open window into the wand. This allows the doctor to remove any growths inside of the uterus without harming the uterine lining. Once the fibroids or polyps are taken away, the wand is removed from the uterus.

Like any other medical procedure even the MyoSure procedure has its own risks and possible complications. After the procedure some woman may have mild to severe abdominal and pelvic pain, abdominal cramps, nausea or vomiting. Consult your doctor in cases when

  • The pain gets worse
  • You have high fever
  • Discharge from the vagina
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Bowel or bladder problems, etc.

After the MyoSure procedure the menstrual period should go back to normal. But, every woman is different. Usually it will take just a day or two until you get back to your daily activity, while it may take up to three months for your menstrual cycle to get back to normal.
